Lisbon, Portugal

Saturday night we arrived in Lisbon and toured Lisbon all day Sunday.  We wish we had more time in Lisbon and it rained the majority of the time but we loved what we saw while we were there! Our apartment was very spacey with a great location!

Saturday night we went to a restaurant right near our apartment and got Vinho Verde (which means green wine but it was white)... it was awesome!

Patti and I shared seafood rice- it was full of lots of seasfood (clams, huge green mussels, prawns)

Aunt Jeanne got another specialty: grilled cod with potatoes and onions

Sunday morning we ventured out in the rain and headed to find a tram!

Love all the tiled houses (tiles are made in Portugal and found all over)

We headed to Belem to see the sights there- first top the Monastery! Waited in the rain forever!

Monastery of Saint Jeronimo

Mosaics in the museum from when the Romans were there... just like in Tunisia

The cloisters inside... just breathtaking (even in the rain)

Don't these look like pretzels? Or maybe it is just me...

Looking down from the second level

The gardens across from the monestary... because of the rain we didn't explore them much but they were beautiful

The monument of explorers

A close-up of the explorers the monument was honoring

The bridge from the monument over the river

In front of the monument was a map that showed where all the explorers went

Next stop... lunch to warm up and dry off!

The sangria was awesome and I got seafood lasagna

Patti with sangria and risotto!

Aunt Jeantn with her pasta

Another view of the bridge... see the statue of Jesus at the end

We walked along the rive to get to our next stop... loved these colorful buildings!

Torre de Belem (Tower of Belem)

The canons shot to protect from those coming in

The Prison

Storage of bombs and such

We climbed to the top of Belem!

Views from the top

The tower we climbed... so proud!

Love all the cute houses

Home of the famous Belem pastry!

We stood in a long (but fast moving) line but it was nuts!!

We got our pastry and totally worth it!

Belem

Then we got back on a tram and headed back to our neighborhood and we stumbled upon a Portugal street fair where it honored all the different regions in Portugal.

Here they are performing traditional dances

We met this nice lady who introduced us to food and wine of her region! Delicious!

Me and the kind woman

Jeanne and Patti with this cake thing we got

All the different stalls

To finish our day we hopped on a tram and took it around part of Lisbon to see the sights!

Great first day in Lisbon!
